A man cooks eggs during celebrations of Cimburijada or "Festival of Scrambled Eggs", in a park in the central Bosnian town of Zenica. People celebrate Cimburijada by gathering by the river, preparing scrambled eggs and sharing breakfast with friends and visitors of their city as a traditional way of marking the first day of spring every year.

Las Fallas Festival: Valencia, Spain A spring festival celebrating St. Joseph’s Day (March 19), the origins of Las Fallas go back in time to the days when wooden lamps, called parots, were needed to light carpenters’ workshops during the winter. As spring — and St. Joseph’s Day (the patron saint of carpenters) — neared, workers ceremoniously burned the parots, which were no longer needed for light. Over the centuries, the ceremony evolved into a five-day celebration involving the creation and eventual burning of ninots: huge, colorful cardboard, wood, papier-mache and plaster statues. The ninots remain on display for five days until March 19, when at midnight they are all set aflame, except for one chosen by popular vote and then exhibited at a local museum with others from years past.

This is the first day of the Spring (Bengali month Falgun). Celebrated across Bangladesh, there are nu!merous fairs and festivals for this event. Young girls wear basanti (yellow) coloured sarees and decorate their hair with fresh flowers while boys wear pajamas and panjabis in celebration.

Spring wouldn’t be the same in northern India without this annual festival. Celebrated by Hindus, who throw colored powder at each other, this vibrant festival of colors celebrates the season’s many hues, as well as events from Hindu mythology, such as when a devotee of Lord Vishnu was saved from death.

! Widely referred to as the Persian New Year, this annual festival also marks the first day of spring — which is celebrated on the day of the astronomical Northward equinox (usually around March 21). Nowruz is celebrated throughout Central Asia and here, in Kyrgyzstan’s capital city of Bishek.
